In banner production, the material choice is as important as the design. There are a few different materials that you can choose for your banner and sometimes they can get confusing. Most commonly, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials are the popular choices for banner printing.

The respective banners has its own advantages and disadvantages that vary from each other. If you are contemplating to choose the right material for your banner, read more about it below.

1. Polypropylene

A banner made from polypropylene material will get a smooth texture with good flexibility. This material is resistant to tearing and getting scratch. It has relatively good durability. The strong point of this material is that it supports graphic printing where it needs to be flat upon display, such as in banner stands, lightboxes, or poster frames. Different from poster papers, polypropylene material can resist creasing and it does not require a laminating process. This material has decent resistance to weather and other outdoor conditions. And it is very environmentally friendly, where in case it burns, it only generates carbon dioxide and water that does not heavily pollute the air.

2. PVC

Compared to polypropylene material, this material is more durable for outdoor uses. A PVC material supports wide formate graphic and is capable to produce crisp and sharper images upon printing. A PVC banner will drape well when hung and it has high flexibility, making it easy to roll up and transport without having to worry about the image getting scrunched or ruined. However, compared to polypropylene material, a PVC material is more harmful to the environment. It contains chlorine and may require a specific way of disposal to avoid contaminating the environment.

Conclusion:

Polypropylene material is better for indoor uses and it has fewer environmental hazards. Meanwhile, PVC material is the perfect material for outdoor advertising, however, it is toxic to the environment and needs caution upon disposal. In choosing the right material for your banner, you need to know where you will put it up or install, so you can choose the suitable one according to where it will be placed. For certain campaigns, especially related to the environment, a polypropylene might be more suitable because you need to be consistent with what you are conveying to the audience. However, if you need it to be installed outdoors, it may last a shorter time compared to PVC material.
