Activating Your Service:

The Tanzania cellular phone number is ONLY located on a white sticker, on the reverse side of your SIM card packaging, above the bar code and underneath the word "Prepaid". The cell phone number will begin "07...". Do not throw away the packaging until you retrieve your cellular phone number.

  • Travel to Tanzania
  • Be sure the battery on your international cell phone is charged
  • Insert the Tanzanian SIM chip into the cellular phone
  • Turn on your phone
  • Enter PIN1 code^
  • Set your cell phone to the GSM 900/1800 frequencies (if applicable)
  • Start calling**

Customer service for your Tanzania prepaid SIM card is available 24 hr./day by dialing 100 at any time from your Tanzania cellular phone.

* Your phone will prompt you for a 4-digit PIN code, which is located on the welcome letter affixed to your prepaid Tanzania SIM card. You will be prompted for PIN1. The PUK is only required to unblock you phone if you enter in a PIN code incorrectly 3x. Follow your cell phone manual instructions to correctly use the PUK to unblock your phone.

** When calling overseas from the United States to your Tanzania cellular phone number callers will need to dial 011 255 followed your Tanzania cell phone number BUT omitting the leading 0 (zero). To call abroad from your Tanzania cell phone simply dial the [+] key (on your cell phone) or "00" followed by the country code and phone number.


Adding Talk Time:

Your Tanzania SIM card package will include a TSH 5000 ($5) airtime voucher. Additional credit is available through the purchase of airtime of airtime vouchers (not another SIM card), in Tanzania. Airtime vouchers are available in the following TSH denominations: 1000 (7-day expiry), 2000 (7-day expiry), 5000 (1-month expiry), 10000 (1-month expiry) and 50000 (1-month expiry).

Simply punch the voucher code into the keypad of your international cell phone to credit your SIM card the respective dollar denomination you purchased.

Airtime vouchers are available locally, in Tanzania at local Tabac shops, convenience stores, gas stations and Celtel shops.

The Domestic rates are per minute for outgoing calls within Tanzania from your prepaid Celtel SIM card while you are in Tanzania. All incoming calls regardless of where they originate are FREE. All calls are billed per minute.

Service Life:

After your airtime has expired you will have 30-days to add another airtime voucher. If you have not loaded additional airtime by this time then your Mobile phone number will be recycled. To get connected again you will be required to purchase another SIM card. The validity period begins the day you arrive in Tanzania.
