Rent a cell phone for use in France. With a cell phone rental, you will also need to purchase a France SIM card. The prepaid International SIM card in conjunction with a rented or purchased GSM phone is the most convenient solution for making cell phone calls, whether you are in the France over in one of the 115 other countries your rental phone covers.

Regardless of where you will be, you will always retain the same phone number. Outgoing rates, with few exceptions, are approximately 50 cents per minute for domestic and international phone calls as outlined below. Incoming calls, with few exceptions, are the same.

Since these cellular phone cards are prepaid, there is no need for a contract, no minimums and no surprise credit card statements. For many people, purchasing a cellular phone while in France is a smarter option to renting.

Activating Your Service:

Insert the Mobicarte SIM card into your GSM phone
Dial 226 to select the language for the menus (English)
Dial 222 then push "*1" (you need to push "asterisk" and then "1" on your keypad) to receive your phone number and call credit
Start calling

Adding Talk Time:

Mobicarte recharge cards are available at most convenience stores, tabac shops and petrol stations throughout France. They may be purchased in 70F (US$9.16), 140F (US$18.40) or 250F (US$32.72) denominations. The 250F recharge card has a bonus 30F included for a total of 280F (US$36.64).

To charge the SIM with a recharge card proceed as follows:

Rub off the gray protective layer
A 14-digit number will be revealed
Dial 224 from your own mobile phone
Follow the instructions you hear

Service Life:

Mobicarte airtime credit will expire every 2 months, however incoming calls can be received for up to 8 months. If the credit is not used in the 2 months, it is lost. If the mobicarte is not reloaded at least once every 8 months then the SIM card and accompanying phone number will expire.

Cellular coverage in France is excellent, far exceeding typical cellular coverage in the US.
